Craft Supplies shops in Chennai

The reason I wrote “craft supplies” is that craft stores in india generally mean stores that sell finished products not stores that carry supplies. Though there are lot of shops that sell finished crafts, there are few and discreet shops that sell supplies. Except if you are living the city for ages or have a good network of friends its difficult to know these shops that are mostly burried in narrow lanes.

There are a few onlines stores that sell craft products but (as far as my knowledge goes) zero online shops that sell craft supplies online in india.

The below list is mostly for embroidery, crochet, knitting, fabric painting, glass painting, painting kits and only for chennai.

1. Landmark,
Spencer plaza,
Chennai.
There is also one in nungambakkam.

2. Odessey,
Adyar,
Chennai.

Oil Paints, Acrylic Paints, Water colours, Paint brushes, Paper, Canvas. These two stores have branded products like camlin, fevicryl etc. Dont expect a variety of stuff as these are primarily book shops.

There are many wholesale stationary shops in chennai that sell paints, brushes, paper and canvas, which i am not aware of…

3. Raja Thread Store,
in the lane beside textile india,
off Ranganathan street,
T.Nagar,
Chennai.

I have already written about this shop in my previous blog and its also the most visited by me.
Embroidery Supplies, Crochet supplies, Knitting supplies, Fabric paints, Glass paints. Got a variety of crochet threads, anchor embroidery kits, beads and other embroidery notions, acrylic yarn for knitting. Go to the stores backroom if you want to explore. In this lane, there are make shift sellers selling embroidery notions (don’t forget to bargain). There is one more craft store  in this lane and another in Ranganathan street. forget names of both of them :-)

4. R.S fancy store
Opp to adyar telephone xchange,
on lattice bridge road.
Adyar, Chennai.
(adyar telephone exchange is on lattice bridge road and very near to adyar bus depot)
I didnt visit this shop till now, known to have a very decent collection of stuff.

5. Adyar thread emporium,
Lattice bridge road,
before lancer showroom,
Adyar, Chennai.

I didnt visit this shop till now, known to have a very decent collection of stuff.

6. Tina, the art and craft shop.
No.11, TNHB Shopping Complex,
100ft Road, Vadapalani,
Chennai.
Phone# 24800570

Painting brushes, painting kits like glass painting kits, embossing painting kits, sand painting kits, stitch painting kits, pvc painting kits, flower making kits, nib painting kits and candle making kits.

7. I heard that there is a good craft shop in royapettah, chennai. does anybody know about it.

8. Royal fancy stores,
shop no 17&18, Annai satya bazar,
Usman road,
T.Nagar, Chennai.

Didn’t visit this shop nor heard any reviews.

I will be glad to know any new shops that you have visited in chennai, or reviews on the ones listed above.
Any wholesale shop selling paints, brushes, kits, threads, notions, yarn in chennai are also welcome.

Edited (22 Sept 09): Also visit craft supply page for more shops in Chennai and other cities.

Do you have an idea of the bead/jewellry supply stores in chennai? Tina arts and crafts have some supplies. Are there any dedicated shops for this?

  4. 5 Geetha June 23, 2008 at 12:41 pm

I saw the post and I also visited the store, but found mainly stuff for making indian jwellery pieces. Are there any shope where we can get imported beads and findings? Also I was not very happy with the quality of the materials in ranganathan street.

  5. 6 iaminchennai June 24, 2008 at 10:18 am

In chennai ( atleast in the shops i know), the stuff you find for making jewellery is mostly for indian designs and they wont be of high quality also. They are great if you want to learn things and dont want to burn a hole in your purse.
I heard from my friend that she found some findings and beads in odessey stores in the crafts and toy section.
I have to check that out myself.

Thanks so much for posting this information. I’ll be heading to Chennai sometime in the next six months and this information is invaluable to me.

I am also interested in obtaining either sandalwood crochet hooks (I know the wood is pricey) or obtaining simple sandalwood dowels/rods that I can have a friend craft some hooks out of for me–can you recommend any place or lumber yard where I might be able to get this?

OSWAL ( Flower Bazaar) I am told is the best place to source beads. Claims: Chennai’s best shot for sourcing imported beads in Chennai. As for the beads at Odessey I saw some really cute beads at their Annanagar store.

I visited this lovely shop ‘Simple Elegance’ . Its a heaven of great handmade paper, japanese paper and other cute goodies. http://www.simpleelegance.in/

Their scrapbook supplies are super cute but thats a different story.

  16. 17 iaminchennai September 21, 2008 at 12:03 pm

Deepa, I heard about OSWAL store also, but i wanted to visit it first before writing a blog on it but could never make the trip :-(

  18. 19 Radha Renganathan September 23, 2008 at 2:12 pm

Does anyone here work on ‘Huck-a-back’ fabric? My mom (me & my sis too) used to work on it when we were kids. It was called toweling cloth in down south Tamil Nadu (Trichy). Any stores you know having the supplies?

  19. 20 iaminchennai September 23, 2008 at 9:09 pm

Flower Bazaar is in Parrys. I am not sure of “Huck-a-back” availability but you can try kadhi stores, dont forget to take a sample with you.

hey, where can i get “iron-on interfacing”, its used while making handbags etc…..to stiffen it………any other ideas are welcome too

  27. 28 iaminchennai December 23, 2008 at 4:43 pm

I am not sure where you are from but You can try tailoring shops. If you are making bags/totes out of cloth that is not so stiff, a lighter and cheaper option i think is the new mosquito sheet by “saint gobain” its flexible and strong and easy to cut with normal scissors.. you can find that in any furnishing/hardware stores.
